How the means of transportation reflect the inequality in Puerto Rico

The U.S. Census Bureau numbers reflect a grim reality on different socioeconomic facts about Puerto Rico that go from the crude numbers of income, poverty and others. One of the parts of the census is on transportation. It not only reflects the inequality but also the efficiency of public policy like public transportation. The mean travel to work for a worker who uses public transportation is 46.7 minutes while someone with a private car, truck or van travels 28.4 minutes, most of the workers work outside of their municipality. A worker with private transportation has a median earning of $18,529 while a worker who must use public transportation has a median earning of $11,580.

An exact 820,782 workers in Puerto Rico drove alone to work, 73,790 carpooled and 17,286 used public transportation to work in 2017. The median age for workers who drive to work is 41.3, workers who carpool is 42.5 and workers that use public transportation have a median age of 45.8.

Workers who use public transportation are 18% foreign born, 44% earn less than $9,999 and 50% are women. Most of them work in the industries of arts, entertainment, recreation, food services, educational services, health and social assistance and waste management services. 20% are government workers while 60% have private wage salary. Even though the mean travel to work is 46.7 minutes, 39% travel more than one hour to work. It is curious that 32% of workers who use public transportation own at least 1 vehicle, the use of public transportation can be due to high gasoline prices, too much traffic, the maintenance is too costly or just the high costs of living.

Around 74% of workers that drive to work with their own private vehicle own a house while only 50% of workers that use public transportation own a house.
