Economy contracts 0.3% in July 2018

The Economic Activity Index reached 121.9 in July 2018, a growth of 0.2% when compared with June 2018 but a 0.3% contraction when compared to July 2017.  For the period of January to July the decline was by 2.7%.


This index is composed by the total non-farm payroll employment, electric power generation, gasoline consumption and cement sales. Both non-farm payroll employment and the electric power generation had losses compared to 2017 while gasoline consumption and cement sales had a positive annual increase.  All components remain a bit far from before hurricane numbers, for instance, cement sales when compared year over year it reflects an increase of 24.2% in sales and 7.7% for gasoline consumption respectively.
